Out of 127 proposals form 35 countries, PLACE IDENTITY, in partnership with design agency TheSwitch and the City of Athens SynAthina Office has been selected in the final phase of the Bosch Foundation Actors of Urban Change Programme. The program Actors of Urban Change aims to achieve sustainable and participatory urban development through cultural activities. This is carried out by strengthening the competencies for cross-sector collaboration among actors from the cultural scene, the administration, and the private sector. Through local projects, coaching and Europe-wide exchange, our actors of urban change put those skills into practice.
Τhe proposal features the creation of a Meet Market across the traditional Meat Market on varvakeios square in Athens. The Meet Market will reuse traditional wooden Athenian kiosks as well as an existing facility that lies abandoned on the square. It will act as an open air market for young Greek designers and craftsmen to showcase and sell their work as well as public venue for related workshops and cultural events. The objective of the project is to support Greek design, arts & crafts, to re-attract citizens and visitors of Athens in an unused public space, to boos the local economy while respecting the commercial and touristic identity of the historic area. One representative from each participating organization travelled from Athens to Berlin 8-13 of December in order to gain know-how and further develop the idea in partnership with similar cross-sectoral teams from Aveiro (Portugal), Banjaluka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Barcelona (Spain), Berlin (Germany), Bratislava (Slovakia), Dresden (Germany), Kaunas (Lithuania), Lublin (Poland), Lviv (Ukraine), Maribor (Slovenia), Zagreb (Croatia) and Zugdidi (Georgia).
